About
Joshua Smith
Photographer, visual storyteller and printmaker in West Monroe, Louisiana.
I photograph wildlife and nature, as well as portraits, editorial and commercial work, but I keep coming back to the natural world: the birds of Louisiana, how they behave, and the cypress swamps and rookeries they call home.
My approach is patience and observation. The strongest photographs do more than record a subject; they give you a reason to stop and look closer. That's the moment I wait for, often for hours in the same marsh, until the light and the bird line up.
Printing came first. In 2008 I founded LOKTAH Photo Lab here in West Monroe, printing for professional photographers and designing natural, eco-friendly packaging for photographers and videographers. Nineteen years in professional labs taught me colour management, papers and fine art reproduction, and that a photograph isn't finished until it's printed well.
So I still make every paper print myself, with an artist's eye and a printer's care. My philosophy is simple: pay attention, respect the subject, and let the photograph speak for itself.
